Roof underlayment cost
Start with a published planning range and worked example, then check its date, geography, unit, inclusions, and limits before comparing a DFW quote.

Published planning numbers with visible assumptions
Cost item
Installed underlayment
- Published amount
- $0.75–$4 per sq. ft.
- Worked scale
- 2,500 sq. ft. = $1,875–$10,000
- What the number covers
- Broad standalone range including labor; exact product and tear-off scope control
Cost item
Material-only underlayment
- Published amount
- $0.10–$0.80 per sq. ft.
- Worked scale
- 2,500 sq. ft. = $250–$2,000
- What the number covers
- Does not include laps, waste, cap fasteners, labor, or roof-covering removal
Cost item
Repair-area underlayment
- Published amount
- $75–$400 per 100 sq. ft.
- Worked scale
- Two 100-sq.-ft. areas = $150–$800
- What the number covers
- Published repair context that includes access through the covering
Published planning range
Data basis: HomeGuide national installed underlayment range dated November 7, 2025; not a DFW quote and not a statement that every roof needs the highest-cost layer everywhere.
Worked example
For a 25-square roof, 2,500 × $0.10 = $250 and 2,500 × $0.80 = $2,000, creating the published material-only band. That is not an installed upgrade price. Compare roll coverage after laps and waste, cap fasteners, field synthetic, and the measured valleys, eaves, penetrations, or transitions receiving self-adhered membrane.
What that price includes
A comparable underlayment line names the product, effective roll coverage, laps, fastening, roof area, waterproof-membrane locations, temporary exposure limit, roof slope, and compatibility with the finished covering.
What moves the number
Simple field coverage under immediate shingles stays lower. Full-deck self-adhered systems, long dry-in exposure, low-slope transitions, many valleys, cold-weather adhesion preparation, and difficult walking surfaces add material or labor.
Costs that must stay separate
Roof-covering tear-off, deck replacement, ventilation correction, flashing, and finished roofing are not interchangeable with underlayment cost. Water-resistant field synthetic is not automatically a waterproof membrane.
What a DFW quote must show
- Field underlayment: Name the roll product, stated coverage, laps, fastening pattern, roof area, and any limits from the finished covering.
- Self-adhered membrane: List valleys, eaves, penetrations, transitions, or other locations separately instead of calling every layer waterproof.
- Coverage and waste: Use the roof surface, roll coverage, laps, cuts, and vertical transitions to establish quantity.
- Fastening and exposure: Specify cap fasteners, traction or walking concerns, temporary exposure limit, and the plan if installation pauses.
Match roll product, stated coverage, laps, cap fasteners, roof area, valleys, eaves, self-adhered membrane locations, exposure limit, walking surface, slope, and compatibility with the selected covering.
Request a measured DFW estimate to replace the roof underlayment cost planning range with current supplier, crew, public-fee, and property-specific numbers.
Common questions
Answers to check before you decide
What should I budget for roof underlayment cost?
Published planning data puts installed roof [underlayment](/roofing-glossary#underlayment) at about $0.75–$4 per square foot. Across 2,500 square feet of roof surface, that produces a broad $1,875–$10,000 standalone replacement exercise, but underlayment is usually bundled into a full reroof and targeted self-adhered membrane should be measured separately.
Which inputs should competing proposals match?
Begin with installed underlayment, material-only underlayment, repair-area underlayment, then compare removal, protection, access, public requirements, disposal, optional work, and closeout.
How should hidden work be priced?
Use a documented unit price, allowance, investigation step, or homeowner approval path. Final quantities and photographs should support the change.
