Research method

Source record

These sources support the factual guidance on this page. Project documents and current official records control when facts change.

Establish the property and inspection conditions

Record the address, date, people present, access limits, weather context, roof planes, slopes, elevations, covering, penetrations, drainage, and visible prior work. Safety and access limits belong in the record rather than being hidden from the conclusion.

Photograph context before close detail

Begin with elevations and roof-plane overviews, then move toward labeled components and individual conditions. A close image without location, scale, orientation, or relationship to the wider roof is weak evidence.

Describe observations before interpreting them

Write the material, location, shape, direction, surface condition, fracture or displacement, and nearby comparison areas. Separate that description from opinions about cause, functional effect, repairability, installation error, age, or maintenance.

Keep construction and claim roles distinct

The contractor can document roof conditions and propose truthful construction. The carrier decides coverage and claim payment; a properly licensed representative may advise the policyholder on the claim. Photographs do not transfer those roles.

What this method does not establish

The record should preserve uncertainty when evidence is incomplete or competing causes remain. A storm date, neighborhood activity, or repeated photograph pattern cannot substitute for observations from the property and the responsible party's decision.
