  1. 1. Apply the ratio: 1,500 ft² ÷ 300 = 5 ft² of total net-free area.
  2. 2. Convert to square inches: 5 × 144 = 720 in².
  3. 3. Split intake and exhaust: 720 × 50% = 360 in² intake; the remaining 360 in² is exhaust.

Treat this as planning arithmetic. The adopted code, attic configuration, intake path, air sealing, appliance safety, and product instructions still need project-specific review.

Think in air paths, not vent counts

A vent's outside dimensions do not tell you how much unobstructed opening it provides. Start with the attic area, convert the selected ratio into a net-free-area target, and only then compare that target with the exact intake and exhaust products. The installed system still needs an open path through the attic.

Measure one connected attic zone

Use the floor or ceiling area beneath the vented space, not the sloped roof surface. If a wall, addition, cathedral section, or blocked framing separates the attic, calculate and design that zone on its own.

Calculate the total net-free area

Divide the attic-zone area by the selected ratio to get square feet of net-free opening, then multiply by 144 to convert square feet to square inches. For a 1,200-square-foot zone at 1:300, the arithmetic is 1,200 ÷ 300 = 4 square feet, then 4 × 144 = 576 square inches total.

Divide the target between intake and exhaust

Choose an intake share and apply it to the total. A 50% planning split in the 576-square-inch example produces 288 square inches of intake and 288 square inches of exhaust. The applicable code and design—not the calculator default—control the permitted ratio and distribution.

Convert square inches into product quantities

Read the net-free-area rating for the exact product and unit shown on its literature. If one listed intake unit provides 18 square inches, 288 ÷ 18 calls for 16 listed units. Round a fractional result up, then check that the openings can be distributed where the air path needs them.

Check the air path before installation

Locate low intake, make sure paint or insulation has not blocked it, preserve baffles above the eaves, and identify the high exhaust serving the same zone. Review ceiling air leaks, moisture sources, combustion appliances, powered fans, and existing exhaust before changing the system.

What the worksheet cannot diagnose

The number is a starting target, not an installation plan. Short ridges, competing exhaust types, concealed blocking, roof patching, electrical work, and an unsealed ceiling can change both the product choice and the work required. A useful scope maps every attic zone and records the product, rating, quantity, intake correction, exhaust location, and access needed.
