  2. 2. Convert to square inches: 5 × 144 = 720 in².

Worked example

Four box vents at the published $75–$175 installed range produce $300–$700. That is not yet a ventilation design: each attic zone must show required net-free area, low intake, exact vent rating, open air path, and how other exhaust is handled.

For a 1,500-square-foot connected attic zone calculated at 1:300, 1,500 ÷ 300 = 5 square feet, or 720 square inches, of total net-free opening. A 50% planning split assigns 360 square inches to intake and 360 to exhaust. Divide each side by the exact product rating and round up to whole listed units before applying any installed unit price.

What that price includes

The device range generally covers the vent and installation opening. A complete proposal should spell out removal or patching, flashing, cap shingles, soffit cutting, baffles, insulation movement, air sealing, controls, electrical work, and weather protection.

What moves the number

Existing balanced intake and safe one-story access reduce added work. Blocked soffits, separated attic zones, vaulted assemblies, competing exhaust, leaky ceilings, combustion equipment, steep planes, and electrical routing move cost upward.

Costs that must stay separate

Do not treat a powered fan's retail price as the system cost or assume it improves the attic. Air sealing, duct repair, insulation, mold work, and combustion-safety evaluation are separate scopes.

What a DFW quote must show

  • Attic zones: Map which low intake and high exhaust serve each connected attic space before choosing products.
  • Rated ventilation area: Compare manufacturer-rated net free area for passive products and show the intake-to-exhaust balance.
  • Intake corrections: Include soffit openings, baffles, blocked paths, insulation movement, or edge intake needed to create a working air path.
  • Powered-device effects: For fans, identify controls, electricity, replacement access, air sealing, other exhaust, and the pressure relationship with the house.
