Live worksheet

A 6:12 roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run.

This is your assumption, not a recommended waste factor.

Flat footprint

1,500 sq ft

Pitch factor

Sloped area

With your waste

This is a planning worksheet, not a measurement report, code decision, inspection, insurance interpretation, warranty, or construction quote.

What each input means

Length and width create the flat building footprint. Rise is the first number in a pitch such as 6:12. The tool uses that pitch to calculate a slope factor. Waste is kept separate so you can see how your own cuts-and-ordering assumption changes the result.

Read the result in the right order

First check the flat footprint. Next compare the displayed pitch factor with the pitch you entered. Sloped area is the geometric surface before waste. The final planning area is also divided by 100 because roofing material is commonly discussed in squares of 100 square feet.

Where a rectangle stops working

Hips, valleys, dormers, intersecting roof sections, curved surfaces, overhangs, additions, porches, different slopes, and inaccessible dimensions can make a footprint calculation materially wrong. The worksheet also cannot decide the right waste factor or order quantity for a product.

Replace the worksheet before ordering

A project proposal should use a professional roof-surface measurement, identify every plane and slope, and account for the selected material's layout and package coverage. Supplier quantities, installation quantities, and billed roof area should be traceable to that record rather than to this screen.
